Merlyn’s Music is a family based business in Heidelberg West.  We are easily accessed by public transport for our music  school students.

 As well as music education, our comprehensive services to  individuals and businesses include an entertainment booking  agency.

 Merlyn's Music offers tuition in piano, violin, and theory for  examinations or for leisure.

Meet Your Teachers:

Steve Bourke

Steve Bourke

Steve has been a working musician since his teens. After the usual suburban piano lessons, he headed out to accompany singers, arrange and play in big bands and also write and play in jazz bands. His understanding of Jazz Harmony comes from a hands – on education from this wealth of experience. He also took improvisation lessons from Mike Nock. He is currently working with several bands, including Continental bands, a jazz combo with bass and various singers, and solo & duo work.

Having worked in the music publishing industry for many years, he is a lover of the printed form. He composes, arranges and also writes theory texts that are used for training students.

Steve composes 2 pianos, 4 hands works to perform with his wife, Glen Harvey.

Glen Harvey

Glen studied classical piano, classical theory and musicianship (AMEB) until entry to the Music Faculty at University of Qld at St Lucia. She was unable to finish her degree, but has been an active teacher to this day. She has taught piano beginners of all ages, and insists on combining theory lessons with practical lessons, making the written form relevant to the playing ability of each student.

Glen now specialises in teaching piano beginners of all ages and also teaches theory for AMEB examinations.

Arun PattersonArun Patterson

Violinist Arun Patterson began his studies at the age of four with the Suzuki method. He studied music at the University of Melbourne, graduating in 2013 with a Bachelor of Music (Honours), as well as receiving the "Atheneum" Violin for gifted second year student.

He began a Masters of Music (Performance) but has since deferred in order to expand his career as a freelance musician and teacher.  Arun served as concertmaster of the Melbourne Youth Orchestra, Hopkins Sinfonia, University of Melbourne Baroque Ensemble and Melbourne City Opera.

Arun performs internationally as an orchestral musician, chamber musician and concertmaster, and has a keen interest in early music, often performing on authentic replicas of period instruments.

Geoffrey Scarlett

Geoffrey began learning piano at age 4 with the AMEB system. He also learned trombone from the age of 11, and throughout high school was heavily involved in the music program at Ivanhoe Grammar as a pianist, trombonist and choral singer.

Since the age of 16, Geoffrey has been teaching AMEB piano, at the recommendation of his teacher Irina Cherkasski. Upon leaving school, he took up a role as an accompanist and repetiteur at Ivanhoe Grammar and transitioned into the role of music director for the 2013/14 production of “Violet”. He has since worked on “Songs for a New World”  by Jason Robert Brown and currently, "Jesus Christ Superstar”.
